Concrete bases in Northampton

Bases for every kind of Northampton garden

We build concrete bases across Northampton and its outskirts, about 25 minutes from our base in Higham Ferrers. That ranges from a shed base at the end of a long terraced garden, reached only by the rear alley, to a garden room or hot tub pad on one of the newer estates.

Much of Northampton sits on clay, which moves as it wets and dries. So every base is dug to firm ground and built on 100mm of compacted MOT Type 1 with a damp-proof membrane, with 150mm of concrete, or 200mm reinforced for heavier buildings.

Areas we cover: Northampton, Duston, Kingsthorpe, Abington, Weston Favell, Moulton, Wootton, Upton and Overstone

Local knowledge

Bases in Northampton: what to know

Northampton has its own council and its own challenges. Here’s what we check.

West Northamptonshire Council

Northampton is covered by West Northamptonshire Council, not North Northants like the rest of our area. Its many conservation areas and listed buildings have extra rules for garden buildings, which we check for you.

Clay ground

Heavy clay swells in wet weather and shrinks in dry spells. A properly compacted sub-base and membrane under the concrete keep your base stable and your building’s floor dry.

Terraced gardens and alley access

Many terraced gardens can only be reached by a rear alley or jitty. We barrow concrete in or pump it over longer distances, so nothing needs to come through your house.

Upton, Wootton and Overstone Leys

Newer estates often have compact gardens and covenants that limit outbuildings or hot tubs. It’s worth checking your deeds before you order a garden building.

How it works

How your base gets built

About 25 minutes along the A45, here’s how a Northampton base gets built.

01

Visit and access plan

We look at the ground and plan how to get concrete in, often via the rear alley.

02

Council check and quote

We check West Northamptonshire Council rules if needed and quote within 48 hours.

03

Dig and pour

Dug past the clay to firm ground, sub-base compacted, membrane laid, concrete poured.

04

Cure and build

About a week later your building can go on, and we can put it up for you.

West Northamptonshire Council. Most sheds and garden rooms are permitted development, but conservation areas and listed buildings have extra rules. We’ll check for you.

Yes. We barrow the materials in through the alley or pump the concrete over, so nothing comes through your house.

A properly built base copes well. We dig to firm ground and lay a compacted sub-base and membrane, which is what keeps a slab stable on clay.
