Rocking slabs, cracked joints and puddles by the back door are the most common patio problems we’re asked to fix. Almost all of them come from shortcuts underneath.
We dig out and lay 100mm of compacted MOT Type 1, then set every slab on a full mortar bed, never on dabs or spots. Natural stone and porcelain get a priming slurry on the back so they bond properly. Patios are laid with a gentle fall away from the house, with drainage channels where they meet the building, and jointed with brush-in compound, sand and cement, or slurry grout to suit the stone.

Natural stone with warm, varied colours and a riven or sawn finish. A timeless choice for most gardens.

“A patio should feel like part of the house: level, solid and dry underfoot. You only get that by bedding every slab properly, so that’s how we lay every single one, even where nobody would ever see the difference.”

Back garden patios almost never need planning permission. In a front garden, the same rules apply as for driveways: if you pave more than 5 square metres with a surface that drains onto the road, you’ll need permission.
Raised patios can count as a platform, so if yours will sit more than 30cm above the ground, check with your council first. Listed buildings and conservation areas have extra rules. We’ll flag anything on our visit.
Indian sandstone has natural colour variation and texture, and suits traditional and cottage gardens. It weathers gently over time and can be sealed to help resist staining.
Porcelain is denser, almost stain-proof and very easy to clean, with a crisp, even look that suits modern homes. Choose an outdoor-rated, textured porcelain for grip in wet weather.
Sweep regularly and keep leaves and debris off, as damp organic matter causes staining and algae. Clean spills quickly, especially on natural stone.
A gentle wash with a suitable patio cleaner once or twice a year keeps it looking fresh. Avoid pressure washing too close to the joints, as it can wash pointing out.

A typical patio of around 20 to 30m² takes 3 to 5 days, from digging out to the final clean. Raised patios, steps and larger areas take longer. We’ll give you a timescale with your quote.
Spot bedding sits each slab on a few blobs of mortar, leaving hollow pockets underneath. A full mortar bed supports the whole slab, so it can’t rock, crack or trap water. We lay every slab on a full bed.
Dense stone and especially porcelain don’t naturally bond well to mortar. Painting a priming slurry on the back of each slab creates a strong bond, so slabs stay firmly fixed for years.
We dig out and lay 100mm of MOT Type 1, compacted, as the sub-base. Each slab then sits on a full mortar bed on top of that.
Yes. Every patio is laid with a gentle fall away from the house, and we fit drainage channels where the patio meets the building when needed.
We use brush-in jointing compound, traditional sand and cement pointing, or slurry grout, depending on the paving. Porcelain is usually slurry-grouted for a neat, tight finish.
