Rushden and Higham Ferrers are our home patch. We’re based on Upper Kings Avenue in Higham Ferrers, so whether you’re near the High Street, on one of the newer estates on the edge of either town, or out towards Rushden Lakes, we’re close by for the site visit, the installation and any follow-up.
We put up new fences, replace tired or storm-damaged ones and hang matching gates, using the same methods and guarantee as everywhere else we work. Posts are set in concrete to about a third of their height, timber is kept off the soil with gravel boards, and every run is checked for line and level.
Areas we cover: Rushden, Higham Ferrers, Chelveston, Caldecott, Newton Bromswold, Wymington, Irchester and Stanwick
Higham Ferrers has a conservation area running along the High Street from Northampton Road to Kimbolton Road, and Rushden has its own conservation area too. Most fences can still go up to the usual heights, but listed buildings and some properties have extra controls, so we’ll check with North Northamptonshire Council first.
Low-lying gardens towards the Nene and Rushden Lakes can stay wet for long periods, which is hard on fence posts. On damp ground we recommend concrete posts and concrete gravel boards, so no timber sits in wet soil.
Builders often fit lightweight lap panels on timber posts, which can struggle after a few windy winters. Some newer homes also have open-plan front gardens in their deeds, so it’s worth checking before putting up a front fence.
Next to a road or a pavement beside one, fences are normally limited to 1 metre without planning permission. Elsewhere the limit is 2 metres. Corner plots are common in both towns, and we’ll design around the rules.
For NN10 gardens we most often recommend concrete posts and gravel boards near the Nene, and closeboard for longer boundaries on the newer estates. We’ll suggest what suits your plot on the visit.
